YMCA Sierra Leone

1978 begann der CVJM-Westbund seine Partnerschaft mit dem YMCA Sierra Leone. Das Land liegt in Westafrika, mit seinen Nachbarländern Guinea und Liberia. Es hat die Größe von Bayern und ca. 4.800.000 Einwohner. Zehn Jahre litt das Land unter einem Rebellenkrieg, der 1999 mit Hilfe von westafrikanischen Friedenstruppen und einem riesigen UN-Kontingent beendet werden konnte. Damit wurde eine Zeit des Wiederaufbaus eingeleitet. Tragisch war dann in den Jahren 2014/15 die Ebola-Epidemie mit tausenden Toten.

Bis heute hat sich Sierra Leone von den Zerstörungen und dem Trauma von Krieg und Ebola noch nicht erholt. Auch die Arbeit des YMCA litt in dieser Zeit und der CVJM-Westbund half durch seinen CVJM-Weltdienst mit Not- und Entwicklungshilfeprogrammen. In den letzten Jahren konnte im Rahmen einer Partnerschaft mit dem CVJM-Kreisverband Lüdenscheid eine Schule und Kindergarten in dem Vorort Kissy der Hauptstadt Freetown, gebaut werden. Der Zentralverein, der zweitgrößten Stadt des Landes und die Südregion erhielten in Bo eigene Gebäude für ihre Ausbildungs- und Schulprojekte und in Kenema, der drittgrößten Stadt, entstand ein Berufsausbildungszentrum. Christian Kamara, der Generalsekretär, begleitet mit seinem Team die Arbeit der 30 Ortsvereine, die in vier Regionen des Landes aktiv sind.

So engagiert sich der Weltdienst des CVJM-Westbundes mit seiner Unterstützung der Ausbildungsstätten des YMCA Sierra Leone intensiv in der Schaffung von Lebensperspektiven für junge Erwachsene. Als SchneiderInnen, Schreiner, Maurer, Friseusen und Büroangestellte, können sie sich und ihren Familien ein Einkommen sichern. Er hilft aber auch bei der Ausbildung von ehrenamtlich Mitarbeitenden und der Kinder- und Jugendarbeit.

In 1978, the YMCA Westbund began its partnership with the YMCA Sierra Leone. The country is located in West Africa, with its neighboring countries Guinea and Liberia. It is the size of Bavaria and has a population of around 4,800,000. For ten years, the country suffered from a rebel war, which was brought to an end in 1999 with the help of West African peacekeeping troops and a huge UN contingent. This ushered in a period of reconstruction. The Ebola epidemic in 2014/15 was tragic, with thousands of deaths.

To this day, Sierra Leone has still not recovered from the destruction and trauma of war and Ebola. The work of the YMCA also suffered during this time and the YMCA West Federation helped through its YMCA World Service with emergency and development aid programs. In recent years, as part of a partnership with the YMCA Lüdenscheid district association, a school and kindergarten were built in the suburb of Kissy in the capital Freetown. The central association, the second largest city in the country, and the southern region received their own buildings in Bo for their training and school projects and a vocational training center was built in Kenema, the third largest city. Christian Kamara, the General Secretary, and his team support the work of the 30 local associations that are active in four regions of the country.

For example, the World Service of the YMCA Western Federation is intensively involved in creating life prospects for young adults by supporting the training centers of the YMCA Sierra Leone. As tailors, carpenters, bricklayers, hairdressers and office workers, they can secure an income for themselves and their families. It also helps with the training of volunteers and children and youth work.
